Baughman Law

Krista L. Baughman

Founder and Managing Attorney

Background & Specialties

After sixteen years in the field – including nearly a decade leading the First Amendment practice at a respected national boutique – I founded Baughman Law on a simple premise: in high-stakes battles involving speech and expression, you don’t need a massive team; you need the right advocate.

I love what I do. My practice involves cutting-edge cases that often involve unsettled areas of constitutional law. My work has resulted in multi-million-dollar judgments, precedent-setting jury verdicts, and landmark settlements protecting First Amendment rights for university students. I have helped eradicate unconstitutional policies at city council meetings, hold global technology companies accountable for AI-generated defamation, and define the parameters of speech and privacy laws as applied to elected officials.

Not every case requires a courtroom battle. Some of my most meaningful work happens before disputes even arise—conducting pre-publication review to help clients publish with confidence while minimizing legal risk. By vetting content before it goes public, I enable writers, journalists, and businesses to protect their work and avoid costly litigation down the road. When conflicts do emerge, I take a sophisticated approach to negotiations, working to secure the corrections, retractions, and apologies my clients deserve.

I am a member of the bars of California, New York, and the District of Columbia and am admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and numerous federal courts across the country.

Beyond the Courtroom

Defending Civil Liberties in the Public Sphere

In addition to my case work, I frequently speak, write, and publish about free speech and civil liberties matters. To give back to a legal community that has given me so much, I also serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the Federalist Society’s Free Speech Practice Group, as Secretary of the Executive Committee of the San Francisco Bar Association’s Litigation Section, and as Membership Chair and Board Member of the First Amendment Lawyers Association (FALA).
